Performance advice from someone who’s lived it
Hi, I’m Sarah.
I know what it is like to build a life around sport.
I know the excitement of chasing a big goal, the uncertainty of wondering whether you are good enough, the pressure of performing when it matters, and the complexity of cycling as a sport, and trying to make good decisions when there are a lot of people, opinions and expectations around you.
I also know that a long and successful sporting career is about much more than what happens in training or on race day.
I spent 14 years racing professionally as a cyclist, competing at the highest level of the sport with some of the world's best teams and riders. Along the way, I won the Australian Road Championships, WorldTour races and stages, represented Australia at nine World Championships and two Commonwealth Games, and experienced the many different sides of professional sport — from the incredible highs to injuries, setbacks, difficult decisions, changing teams, challenging relationships and the realities of building a career in an increasingly professional environment far away from home.
But my journey into sport started long before professional cycling.
I was a gymnast, a triathlete and a duathlete before finding cycling. I eventually made the transition into professional road racing later than many of my peers. I know what it is like to be developing, to be learning as you go, and to build something without having all the answers from the beginning.
Alongside my sporting career, I have always been interested in understanding why athletes perform well and what helps them continue to perform well over time.
I have a degree in Sport Science, formal study in clinical physiology, qualifications in fitness and cycling coaching, and experience working with athletes and people in sport long before I became a professional cyclist. My education has given me an understanding of the physical and scientific side of performance. My career has given me something different: first-hand experience of what it actually feels like to live it.
Over time, I realised that some of the most important conversations in an athlete's career have very little to do with training.
The part of sport nobody really prepares you for
Athletes have coaches. They have doctors, physios, nutritionists, managers, agents, teammates and support networks.
All of these people can play an incredibly important role but sometimes you need someone who is simply in your corner. Someone independent, and someone who understands the environment because they have lived in it. Someone you can talk to when something has gone wrong, when you are unsure what decision to make, when a relationship within your team has become difficult, when you are questioning your direction, or when you simply cannot see the situation clearly because you are too close to it.
That is where Sarah Roy High Performance Consultancy comes in.
No agenda. Just perspective, clarity and guidance you can trust.
My role is not to tell you what to do. It is to help you figure things out. I provide personalised, independent support for developing, amateur and professional athletes who want to perform well while also building a career and life that they can genuinely enjoy and sustain. Sometimes that means working through a difficult situation. Sometimes it means preparing for a major decision. Sometimes it means talking through what happened after a disappointing race or setback. Sometimes it means helping you navigate a new team, move overseas, manage expectations, communicate more effectively, or understand what you actually want from your sport. And sometimes, you simply need someone who understands.
My approach is practical, honest and individual. I draw on my experience in elite sport, my education in sport science and physiology, my coaching background, and the lessons I have learned from more than a decade inside professional cycling.
Because a successful career is about more than results
I have come to believe that the athletes who enjoy the longest and most rewarding careers are not necessarily the ones who get everything right. They are the ones who learn how to adapt. They know themselves. They can communicate. They can handle difficult periods without losing sight of the bigger picture. They understand that relationships matter. They know when to push, when to step back and when to ask for help. And, importantly, they understand that their identity and their life are bigger than their results.
That is the perspective I want to share.
Whether you are a young rider trying to understand the pathway into professional cycling, an amateur athlete balancing serious competition with work and life, or an established professional navigating the pressures of an elite career, you do not have to figure everything out alone.
Your sport matters. But so do you.
My goal is not simply to help athletes achieve more. It is to help them understand themselves better, make better decisions, navigate the difficult moments and get more out of the journey. Because a successful sporting career is not only measured by what you win. It is also measured by the person you become along the way.
